About The Pontoon Beach Area
The city of Pontoon Beach is located in southern IL; near the Illinois border. This Madison County village originated from the cottages and clubhouses constructed next to Long Lake. The area was also known as Jones Park; a name that derived from a property owner named Ollie Jones. There are two theories as to how the name Pontoon Beach came about; one having to do with pontoons being used as support for a bridge and another where pontoons were used for floating docks.
Being situated near the lake, the Pontoon Beach area became a well-known place for outside residents in surrounding towns to go for leisure outdoor activities such as picnics, swimming, fishing, and hunting. The city was incorporated in 1962 and became self-governing with the election of villiage officials in March of 1963.
